The DUI Experience
The Facts…Drinking, Drugs and Driving: Alcohol use is the number one problem among our youths.
Fast Lane Raceway has created a new program called The DUI Experience. The program was designed to aid in the fight against drunk driving using a fun and proactive teaching approach. Driving Against DUI targets youth between the ages of 13-21, teaching about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. The program will travel between high schools, colleges, churches, Indian Reservations, and other youth programs throughout Arizona. Driving Against DUI also works with corporate safety programs. The DUI Experience begins with an explanation of alcohol and drugs, an alcohol consumption time line, and the staggering figures of DUI related accidents each year. After the lesson, students get to test their abilities first hand. Specially designed goggles are used to simulate the effects of alcohol and drugs. The goggles distort perception making it hard to focus on near and far away objects. Under strict control of Fast Lane Raceway, students are allowed to drive a kart. The students must maneuver through a cone obstacle course within the confines of a protective safety barrier system. If the students become too disoriented, the karts can be stopped with the touch of a button, by use of a remote control system. Prior to the driving test students are given a sobriety test which includes touching their nose, walking a straight line, catching a tennis ball, and standing on one foot.
